KOINONÍA
«My art is the way I re-establish the bonds that unite me with the universe.»
Ana Mendieta, artist and performer
Koinonía: (Κοινωνία), from the Greek, communion.
A body enters the water. It becomes light and floats. It is simple physics. In real life we can obey formulas and resolve things according to the dictates of science, because everything has its explanation. A walk through the countryside renews the joy of our spirit; it is a ritual celebration of life. But when we connect inwardly with Nature and its elements, external reality is transformed, and we understand that we are just one more link in the chain of life. It is then that this contact with the natural world becomes a mystical experience of fullness, a sensation of expansion that connects the self inwardly with everything the eyes see and the heart feels. A perfect communion, a koinonía.
Isa Sanz’s work Koinonía reveals the closeness between her artistic creation and a profound philosophical intuition of reality, exploring through this series of photographs feminine strength, calm, integration with nature, color, blood, water and magic — elements deeply tied to the construction of the feminine. Sanz’s photography also brings out the ephemeral character that surrounds us. It submerges beneath the skin, refuses the surface, and prefers to dive within, exploring the recesses of existence. It reacts to the current, to the tide, to the winds, and produces results that lead the viewer to different conclusions, but always from a gaze that connects us with the primordial.
The spectacular setting of the Koinonía series is Ibiza, the magical island that has been home to the author for several years. Ibiza could not be any other backdrop for this work: it is the peaceful, tolerant island that nourishes and feeds the spirituality of those who connect with its red earth. The artist uses her privileged natural surroundings as an instrument for constructing the human mind — even though that setting undeniably exists in aesthetic terms in its own right — first through an intimate act of recognition, in which she appropriates nature and feels it, before it is subsequently reinterpreted artistically, thus giving a complete turn to the creative process. Isa Sanz becomes aware of Ibiza — her island — as the place where life happens, a space whose nature exerts such power that it diminishes us as it integrates us into it, while at the same time connecting us with a feeling of shared existence and belonging.
Through these self-portraits, Isabel Sanz speaks of her position in the face of the world; her body conveys the atmosphere of the landscape, and in turn, the landscape reflects the author’s spirit. Each of her photographs is a micro-narrative, a brief story that relates her own identity to the island’s landscape as an emotional event. In Koinonía, the author proposes a different vision of the female body through these intuited self-portraits, since — in contrast to the rest of her work, where the frontality of the models is the norm — in almost none of these photographs does she show her face. Using her own body as the most truthful instrument, Isa Sanz reveals a spiritual form in which her vital vision and her creativity converge, resulting in a body of work with an inherent charge of sensitivity and revelation. Her soul, her intimacy, opens up and is unveiled, showing itself to the outside world through the imagined window of photography, where the Mediterranean, omnipresent light accentuates the poetics of her compositions.
These images were taken intuitively, in a demanding photographic exercise in which connection with the present moment was prioritized, giving value to the experience of the act of photographing and posing in harmony with nature. Thus, the bodies fluctuate in perfect communion with the exterior light — errant and radiant — that strives to find its place in the most intimate corners. Nor is the choice of the tondo format for presenting the pieces incidental. The symbolism of the circle connects with the infinite, with the eternal, and offers a new way of looking that breaks with the usual readings of artistic representation. It is an absolute, boundless gaze that poses a challenge to the viewer.
The woman who appears in her work conveys an echo of poetic refinement and sensitivity bathed in freedom. Nudity, reclaimed as the purest way of connecting with the essence of each woman, reveals the paradox of the power of vulnerability, and at the same time, the courage involved in shedding one’s layers of protection.
Menstrual cycles, the maternal womb, and childbirth have given rise to the link between the female body and its mysteries and the natural world. Feminine consciousness is strongly tied to the body itself, a platform for creation and a territory for exploration. In Koinonía, there is a constant reference to blood — through the undulating red fabrics — an exceptional symbol of the dichotomy between life and death, between fertility and homicidal tragedy. This vital fluid is a reference point in Isa Sanz’s creative process, the medium through which she manages to connect with her most primitive beliefs and deepest emotions, linking herself to an omnipresent feminine force.
In her series, Isa Sanz alludes to these vital moments in a woman’s life: the woman who wraps herself and floats in a hollow between the rocks, as if it were the maternal womb; birth, made of remnants of water and blood; menstruation, flowing in the form of red fabric; or fullness in symbiosis with the sea, the wind and the sky… The primordial mysteries of the feminine have always been associated with nature through women’s intimacy; the olive trees Sanz depicts in perfect union with the woman, the poppies that bloom in unison across the island’s fields, the harvested yellow wheat — all are symbols of fertility.
The woman of Koinonía lives in a continuous symbiotic relationship with animals and plants, in profound respect for the natural cycles of the earth. She is the woman who ensures the continuity of the group, who guarantees fertility and abundance; she is, ultimately, the sum, the origin and the end, and at the same time, the opposites — she is undifferentiated divinity. Isa Sanz thus represents the soul of a woman who feels her connection to the Earth, a being who smells of poppies, red as passion and blood, and who knows the mysteries of procreation, the potential of life growing and being nourished in the womb, followed by the sacred act of birth, and who knows how to reveal herself in all her beauty. At its core, the artist represents herself, making manifest her own bond with the island’s nature, conceiving spirituality as union with all that exists. The path of awakening down which this series leads us can be summed up in a single word: integration.
The author’s ultimate aim is to exalt women’s experiential universe, though not with the intention of subverting the terms in which the category of «woman» has been framed throughout history. She constructs her concept of femininity through photographic language, from the perspective of a woman who authentically reflects her own essence, without the filter of the male gaze, but with the conviction that real equality can be built from the diversity of the sexes. Koinonía ultimately demonstrates the need to recover balance with the banished feminine archetype in order to establish both internal and external harmony.
